Minimum Age Requirement

  • The Historical Halloween Ball is an adults-only event. All attendees must be 18 years of age or older on the date of the event (26th October 2024).

  • The event organisers and venue reserve the right to ask for age verification ID upon entry to the event, and when purchasing alcohol. Refusal to produce valid ID when asked may result in refused entry to the event, regardless of any purchase of a valid ticket.

Costume Technique / Historical Accuracy

  • Attendees must be suitably attired in historical costume, representative of an era between the Medieval period and 1910.

  • Costume should be constructed to a reasonably good level of craftsmanship.

  • The base silhouette of each costume should be of a good level of historical accuracy before more fantastical elements are added in order to meet the event theme.

    • This includes the wearing of the correct historical undergarments (e.g. corsets/stays and petticoats for the ladies), to achieve the correct historical silhouette of the era being portrayed.

  • Costume should be made by attendees or another historical costume maker (hobbyist or professional).

    • Exception: Suits may be purchased as new or antique/vintage, but must be at least of a cut and style suitable for Edwardian, Victorian or earlier periods, and suitably accessorised. Modern suits or wedding attire should be avoided.

  • Long skirt trains must be bustled, pinned, or held up for dancing. They can be let down for entering the venue and whilst taking photographs.

Costume Artistry / Theme

  • Costumes must also meet the event's Halloween theme and dress code - Haunted: An Ode to Ghost Stories and Gothic Literature.

  • Attendees must read the full theme and dress code details here.

  • Attendees should consider a concept for their costume that will meet the theme, and achieve this through choice of fabric, embellishments, accessories, props, and/or hair & makeup (these can be historically inaccurate in order to meet the theme).

    • Costumes can be inspired by a specific character, story, or setting, or a broader gothic literature/ghost story theme.

  • An overall historical silhouette must be maintained; costumes should still be easily identifiable as being from a specific historical period.
  • Attendees should not attend the event dressed as ‘monsters’ (e.g. vampires, werewolves, Frankenstein, etc). Costumes representing ghosts, spirits, wraiths, and the dead or dying are welcomed and encouraged.

  • Any props or large costume pieces must be safe to dance in, or if not, must be removable.

  • Modern prom dresses, steampunk attire, or a generic goth costumes are not permitted.

  • Failure to comply with the dress code may result in non-admittance to the event.

  • If felt necessary, attendees can get their costumes checked ahead of time by emailing photos to historicalhalloweenball@gmail.com.

Food & Drink

  • The complimentary finger-food buffet will offer a selection of Vegetarian food options, but no other special dietary requirements can be catered to.

  • Drinks are not included in the ticket and must be purchased from the bar.
